Releasing The Tie That Binds Me, Part 1

My tongue tie has been tight as long as I could remember. I knew my frenulum was restricted even before I knew it as a frenulum or what “tongue ties” were or that it effected anything.

When I started researching why my babies hurt me when they nursed and didn’t gain well at all, I came upon tongue and lip ties. Along my researching, I found this video, and it made me wonder what my body was doing involuntarily because of my own tongue tie, or what tensions I hold without realizing because it’s so “every day:”


Awhile back, I had a friend share pictures with me of an OLD book she owns, in which tongue tie revision is noted in its own section. Revisions are not some new little fad. Take a look at page 326-327 of Dr. Chase’s Recipes, from the year 1874!! (What this means is: breastfeeding has always revealed this. Synthetic formula has masked it and led to lifelong issues for so many people!) I’ve read other articles that say revisions were taking place in the late 1600’s, too, but there was no citation for it.

Recently, that same friend had her tongue tie released and has expressed much of what the woman in that video did, and more. Migraines gone, pigeon-toe gone, her face shape has changed! She was the catalyst for me wanting to get a release, too.

Then another friend shared this picture with the following note attached:

“This is really incredible. An oral restriction, like a tongue tie affects your entire body.”


The comments from this were wonderful, with one of the women saying she wanted to learn to DIY tongue tie revision. I thought I might be one of very few who weren’t just “tempted,” but were actually serious and determined. Her comment spurred me on to finally start researching how I could *safely* revise my tongue tie, if I decide to DIY it after researching.
So, this post is about what I have learned and, eventually I will add the before and after.

This is NOT medical advise. This is not an encouragement for you or anyone to go and do this, either. It is informational only.

Craniosacral therapy before and after revision is really important – this releases built up tension that has been created all over the body from the oral restrictions. Having a natural provider help you is vital, as is CST self-treatment between sessions.

Kava kava is a good numbing tea that would be useful for adults (who are not pregnant or nursing), but I’d be likely utilizing an essential oil blend for pain, if anything. Babies tongue ties are not as fully developed in the fiberous aspect yet, and adults have more fibrous tissue in there. It’s the only reason I contemplate using a numbing agent.

Rethinking Tongue Ties: Anterior Vs Posterior Is Irrelevant is where I first understood that in order for the revision to be successful, you must cut back to create a diamond shape.

I do really well with seeing things in action to know what to do.

Here is a video that shows a nearly good diamond-revision, with laser. It looks like it needs to be further revised horizontally.
This video shows an excellent diamond-revision, plus fibrous tissues are quite clear. I appreciate that the revisionist went back a second time and ensured a clear diamond cut.

Within the family birth and home birth communities, it is heard of that a mom, dad, or midwife simply takes longer finger nails and snips the tongue tie. But, again, an adult tie is more fibrous, so I looked around for frenectomy tools. I found a 2-set of tenotomy scissors and a tongue director for under $15 total, on Amazon.

Stretches are pretty important. Some people have said they never did stretches on their baby and it never reattached, but most who don’t stretch find reattachment to be an issue:

Pain relief comes in a few different forms. With my babies, after they have been revised by drs, I give them Rescue Remedy for Kids for the trauma, Arnica Montana for speedy healing, and apply helichrysum essential oil (it will be copaiba essential oil from now on, now that I have that) externally around the outside of their mouths for pain relief.
I decided on these three things based on several sources (among others, these just make the information concise as to why I avoided certain things and chose others).

For now, this is my little collection that I have found pertinent to possibly clipping my own tongue tie. I am still researching and looking for information to feel certain I understand both the procedure and the potential pros and cons of attempting this in my own home, on myself.

Pregnancy Bile

It’s a reality for a lot of mommas, whether it’s morning sickness or heartburn, or both. Very few escape the effect of bile during pregnancy to some degree.

During the beginning of my pregnancy with Leela, my midwife friend told me about Karen Hurd and beans. Apparently, soluble fiber binds to the bile that enflames “morning sickness” and then it flushes right out of your body. Since it was only a 1/4 cup of beans, a relatively affordable “supplement,” I decided to give it a try.
What I found remarkable was that it really worked – and quickly! Her suggested 20 minutes seems quite wonderful, but I had relief in 5-10 minutes, every time.

Then, when I was in the third trimester with Leela, heartburn kicked in. I was about to do a web search for natural remedies, when it struck me that heartburn is related to bile. I decided to try legumes again, but by this time I was growing tired of the thought of beans. So, I chose peanut butter. A little spoonful and heartburn was gone.

Now that I am into my third trimester with this little one, I feel pretty thankful that I hadn’t had heartburn kick in!
I finally started adjusting my night-time alignment, by transitioning away from using a pillow. After a week and a half, I had my first night of completely comfortable pillow-less sleep. No aches or pains. It was very cool. Two nights later, I awoke in the middle of the night with bile in my mouth and heartburn. Up I went again, propped onto a pillow. Drat.

Then, silly me, it hit me that there must be good sources of soluble fiber that are Paleo-friendly. Which is when I found acacia senegal. This is apparently chock full of it. After a couple of days of researching Chris Kresser’s suggestion at the end of this article, I decided to order some last night. Relying on the evidence from my own life of Amy Yasko’s protocol mantra “low and slow,” (good document here, but not Yasko’s) I am starting this the same way.

I’m hoping this works out – I can’t wait to go back to a pillow-less sleep. 🙂

Finding Fossa


It’s been a week longer than I hoped to update my armpit experiment, but I’ve been healing some foot issues, so I hope the delay is understood!

I’ve Got Guts- Inside of Me!


It’s been well more than a few days, but I’m back with how I worked to heal my diastasis recti (DR).

First, it’s hard to say these are “exercises” for me, as they really aren’t. They’re just part of healthy, natural movement that most Westernized people have completely omitted from their lives. Integrating them back into our daily living is no more “exercise” than adding meat back into someone’s diet is a “medicine” : it’s just adding in a vital component to health and longevity.
You could take a quick detour to my favorite, short Katy Bowman article, that summarizes nicely why “exercise” is overrated to me: My Manifesto.
That said, I understand that the word “exercise” symbolizes “more movement” for a lot of people, and so I continue to use it for now. (By the way, “exercise” is way less movement than you think, compared to “non-exercisers.”)

Second, and on to what you were waiting for, the Restorative Exercises that were integral to healing my DR were small changes built up over time.
The first change I made was keeping my pelvis untucked (when in doubt, stick your butt out), making sure my ASIS (anterior superior iliac spine) and pubic bones were in a vertical line with one another. This prevents the bulk of your weight bearing down on your sacrum when sitting and walking.

The next change (and very soon after the first change) was relaxing my ribs down, rather than puffing out. Relaxing your ribs down holds your organs in, whereas puffing them out allows your internal organs to fall forward, stressing the two sides of your rectus abdominis muscle.

The first two changes were the most important to make, in terms of diastasis recti, because it’s the “walls of defense” to keeping our guts where they belong.
After this, I shifted my weight off of the tiny bones of my foot, the toes, and into the bigger bones of the heel.

And… I WALK!
I found early on with my hypothyroidism, that hard and fast movements deplete me for days. The simple act of walking keeps lymph flowing, keeps muscles active, and engages much more than the average person would think!

Better still, in the last month before my gap closed from one finger-width to completely, I did a different Snack (or Aligned & Well DVD on weekend days) every single day for the month of June. The natural movement variation in these videos helped my “mummy tummy” go away completely.

At the Baggins’ household lately, things are settling down from summer antics, play, and leisure, as we prepare to start Year 8 of Ambleside Online.

I’m finding that utilizing some concepts in Dressing Your Truth is helping me understand my family and how to work with each one of them.

Daryl has had a few weeks of layoff through his company, but they were deliberately staggered one week at a time each month. Most of the employees treated this as a vacation/free time and we really weren’t different. We spent time doing some fun things and took the opportunity to fix some bigger things around the house. He is definitely a Type 3, which I am very grateful for. He works hard and is very loyal and loving, even when his vision is strictly on the to-do list.

Melody is growing up and discovering changes are not as scary as she thought they would be and are rather pleasant when she accepts them. She often makes me think of Katy in Stepping Heavenward and that is an encouraging, lovely thought for me, especially on the days where I feel like I’m “in the trenches.” She is a Type 1. So, with her being Type 1 and me being Type 4, can feel very overwhelming sometimes… we have completely polar opposite energies and ways of thinking. I tell her regularly that she’s the best first child I could have imagined – she helps me grow!

Leela really wants to join in with us as we have more formal learning moments, so I decided to institute Morning Time this year. We’ll see how she does with it. She is a constant comfort to others and loves helping. I am certain she is a Type 2, so I am mindful to let her know how much I see her and value her, and how strong her presence is for all of us.

Stryder is playing games to tease us, walking well, communicating with about 10-15 words/sounds, and *loves* snuggling with us. I have no idea what Type he is yet. I just know we love him and he’s also a blessing to the family.

As for me, I’m almost through the 3rd semester of year one (in a two-year program) in Restorative Exercise, to become a certified personal trainer. It’s intense, but I am loving it!
I had a severe UTI (not found with testing at urgent care) that led to a massive kidney infection, but I’ve been amazed to see natural supplements and botanicals work wonders, at yet another point in my life. Between probiotics and d-mannose, the UTI has gone and I am no longer hurting from kidney pain. I am taking a bottle of enzymes too, to deal with candida, and I’m impressed. I hope the one bottle is all I ever need to take! I’m about to add pau d’arco tea for candida as well.
I’m choosing to let my 4th semester of Mother’s Feast rest for now, after being convicted by some CM-inspired articles I’d read. For my Type 4 self, letting that 4th planned semester rest is going to be a feat of will! I am going to write more about letting the 4th semester go later, but for now, thus suffices.

When Your Guts Fall Out (Literally)


Once upon a time… about a year and eight months ago, while I was pregnant with Stryder… I felt my abdominal muscles tear away from each other. The pain was intense for about a day, then subsided. This happened a few more times during my pregnancy.
I knew what this meant: diastasis recti (DR). I’d been reading through Katy Says for several years (though not implementing almost anything), had been waiting for her Restorative Exercise Institute to accept new students, and was well aware of what had happened.

About two months after I had Stryder, my internal organs started falling out between this gap, a couple times a week. I would become nauseous, dizzy, and had a little harder time concentrating. I knew this was serious. I had read a few cases of this happening to people, though not many, but had never known anyone “in real life” to have diastasis recti so obviously that their guts fell out.
I never measured the gap because the thought of feeling it made me sick and I knew with my organs falling out it was pretty darn bad.

I knew I had to do something before I got pregnant again, as another baby would tax those torn muscles even further, making postpartum even worse.
I began asking alignment junkies what my best bet would be to do in terms of healing. I was guided to Mutu, which could then be followed by Restorative Exercise Specialist (RES) training when it opened. Low and behold, RES training opened in the next month or so, while I had been contemplating spending a couple hundred dollars (we didn’t really have) on a system I’d use only to heal my DR.

It’s been 7 months since I started Year 1 of RES Training. Last month it dawned on me that it had been quite awhile since my guts fell out… thinking back, about a month after I started RESt!
I decided to check my abdominal muscles and could just barely get two fingers between the gap. A few weeks later, my wonderful midwife friend checked me and she could not get any fingers in.

Baby’s Solid Starts


This morning, Melody asked if she could feed Stryder some hard boiled egg with Siracha sauce. It prompted me to share a letter I wrote to a friend one time, when they asked me how I go about giving solids to my littles.

I am an avid researcher when I set my mind to something. One of my main aims in life is to honor God by taking the best possible care of my family member’s temples, just as we care for our minds and spiritual life. Caring for my first daughter’s health started me on a healthy living journey and childhood nutrition continues to be a passion of mine because of all that I have learned.

Feel free to ask questions, and absolutely don’t take my word for it. Research, research, research! I love sharing information because my goal isn’t to convert people to “MY” way, but to remind folks constantly that there are always alternatives to every area of health than what we’ve been trained to believe for the last 50 years, and it excites me to get people empowering themselves by researching.

I’m going to give you information that I’ve gathered together and gotten the best guidance from when it comes to starting babies on solid foods.

First, make sure your little one has the signs of readiness for eating. It really is important they are all there! I know its difficult to wait; we’ve been told breastmilk “isn’t enough” at the 6-month mark, but its simply not true. Whether you feed them before their guts are ready or after, I promise you’ll get lots of cute, messy pictures! Just because a babe is reaching for something doesn’t mean they need it. They’ll also reach for a pile of dog poo if its close enough! 😉 All the signs need to be there!

Second, giving a baby rice cereal is a bad idea. The reason the human gut shouldn’t have rice before 18-24 months is because it is a grain. All grains are difficult/virtually impossible for humans to digest at this age, producing the effect of tearing at our little guts. What that means is no grains, even gluten free grains, until about 2 years old. That includes oats, sorghum, buckwheat, rye, barley, wheat, rice, and more.

Third, in “modern” America some doctors will say that the first foods to introduce to baby should be “low allergen” foods, foods which tend to be bland and not very nutrient dense, but the truth is, as long as you add in the high-allergen foods one at a time and watch for reactions in the following few days, there’s no reason to limit what they’re having aside from grains. In fact, a lot of babies that have a wide variety of foods offered early on (this means we need to be a good example and not be picky, too), are less likely to be picky later on! When Leela was out with us at about 9 months old, she loved a bit of spicy BBQ ribs when we went out. 🙂

I take a little bit from “baby led weaning” that makes scientific sense, a little bit from Nourishing Traditions that makes scientific sense, and a little bit of what I’ve found works for us outside of that. I’ll give you a typical meal in-house, and in parentheses I’ll note how that’s different from either method.

I waited to let Leela start on solids until all the signs of readiness were present (Nourishing Traditions gives an arbitrary age, but every baby is ready at a different age, and it does the gut damage to give solids before ready, even if puréed), and will do the same for Stryder. I try to time nursing babies before a meal so when they are eating solids, they can eat with us, but that doesn’t always happen. I nurse from both breasts for as long as they want. Then, we have a beeswax canvas that gets laid down on the livingroom floor, where we all eat, and they sit upright next to me in the middle of the beeswax canvas (in baby led weaning it is not recommended to let them eat outside of a high chair, but reading body alignment information, we try to sit on the floor or use exercise balls as much as possible – Katy Bowman of Aligned and Well has me convinced! http://www.alignedandwell.com/katysays/), with someone’s leg behind them for extra support in the beginning stages. Forced sitting is also not good for humans.
They eat off my plate, I make sure there are big hunks for them to gnaw on, and Leela was always content (because NT recommends starting solids so early, most everything is mashed/puréed according to their guides). Sometimes I had to chew food up for her, which is also okay. Chewing food beforehand actually aids your baby’s digestion AND gut flora, whereas using a baby blender doesn’t add the beneficial bacteria that your spit does (not mentioned in either BLW or NT that I can recall). What I usually chew is smaller bits of food like lacto-fermented sauerkraut. As humans begin eating solid foods, they need to continue to build good gut flora – through healthy bacteria, which is found in lacto-fermented foods and beverages. Such as sauerkraut, yogurt, kefir, kombucha, condiments that have been lacto-fermented (ketchup, jam, mayonnaise…), etc. This maintains and/or heals gut flora. I highly recommend lacto-fermented vegetables at every age of solid-food eating (including adulthood).

When she was done, I cleaned her up and then wiped off the beeswax canvas with some natural cleaner.
